Diamanda Galas, the ever haunting, ever outspoken, voice of the avant-garde. I came across this cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”  and had to share it. Perhaps a tamer version of the Galas I’m used to, it still reverberates a certain something that feels a little like fear. My favourite comment on the YouTube page is:

Does she turn every song she’s song [sic] into a nightmare?
So without further ado, Billie Holiday and Diamanda Galas, respectively. If you’re reading this in an RSS Reader, here is the Holiday video and here is the Galas video.

You can also read/watch an interview from 2003, The Politics of Disquiet.” Galas’s Wikipedia page is also an interesting read. There’s also a hefty list of press coverage, with links, on the Diamanda Galas Official Website. (I kept getting a Page Not Found error, but a refresh did the trick.)
